Tread Depth

The minimum legal tread depth is 1.5 mm across the width of the tread. When the tyre is worn to the legal limit the bars will be flush with the surface of the tread. While that is the legal requirement some car manufacturers recommend you replace your tyres before they wear to that extent.

Wear Condition

What causes abnormal tyre wear?

There are different kinds of abnormal tyre wear, each caused by a variety of issues. These can stem from problems such as suspension or wheel alignment troubles, an internal tyre fault, or the result of driving on under inflated or over inflated tyres.

How to check for abnormal tyre wear?

It is a good idea to have your tyres inspected once a month.

This goes for both tyre pressure and tread depth. You should always check your tyres before you set off on any long journeys.

At Airlie Auto with every service we offer a free pressure and tread depth check. We also look at any signs of damage or problems.

Tyre Pressure

Maintaining the Correct Tyre Pressure

There are 3 main reasons why maintaining the right tyre pressure is important.

1. The first is safety. Tyres that are under inflated can overheat; and over inflated can lead to poor vehicle handling on the road.

2. The second reason is economy. Over or under inflated tyres suffer more damage than those with the correct pressure and need to be replaced more regularly. Vehicles with under inflated tyres have increased rolling resistance that requires more fuel to maintain the same speed.

3. The third reason for maintaining the correct tyre pressure is the environment. Correct tyre pressure helps to maintain fuel efficiency. This can equate to lower CO2 emissions coming from your vehicle.

The correct tyre pressure setting for your vehicle is in your vehicle Handbook and also displayed on the driver’s side door sill.

Always check tyre pressure with a tyre pressure gauge when your tyres are cold.

Wheel Balance

Tyre balance, also referred to as tire unbalance or imbalance, describes the distribution of mass within an automobile tire or the entire wheel (including the rim) to which it is attached. ... It can also result in a wobbling of the steering wheel or of the entire vehicle.

Wheel Alignment

The signs of misaligned wheels can be obvious because your car can feel as though it’s pulling to one side of the road, or your steering wheel is shuddering or vibrating.

Either could mean that your wheel alignment is out and it can happen gradually from everyday driving, or from incidents like hitting a curb or pothole.

If your vehicle’s wheels are not correctly aligned, they could cause premature wear on your tyres and suspension components. This can cause problems with your vehicle’s handling, performance and the overall safety

Wheel Rotation

One of the best ways you can look after your tyres is by rotating them regularly. Swapping the rear tyres to the front and vice-versa ensures that tyres wear evenly and last significantly longer. As a guide, tyres should be rotated every 5,000 to 8,000 km even if there is no sign of uneven wear
